Conversion to yen??

whats the best way to convert my uk sterling into jaapnese yen.im actually moving out there, and ideally would need a bank account.is it wise to travel there with the sterling and deposit accorsing to the japaense exchange rate? or i would much prefer to set up an account here in london to which i can full access to my money from japan. citibank offer a foreign bank account, but it has no interest. any ideas?
