Washington - National Zoo, Natural History Museum (if he likes dinosaurs), Wolf Trap Farm.

NYC: Central Park (including zoo & carousel), Bronx Zoo, FAO Schwarz's flagship toy store If that's not exciting, I give up).

Google "things to do with kids in..." for many more ideas.

Why not set him a task of finding things for him (or all of you) to do.

If he can be bothered !

If he cant, leave him at home.
Who are Abercrombie & Fitch?
In Washington D.C.
all of the Smithsonian museums are free. You could spend several days just seeing those. I would imagine that he would be interested in the air and space museum. Any one would be impressed with the memorials on the Mall.
A good kick up the backside I think!

Does he go around saying "I'm bored. There ain't noffink to do round 'ere"? Tell him to find something to do. If he's not excited about going to the US then I'd leave him at home missesbell and go and enjoy it yourself.
Andy, right on. Who needs a sullen comatose teenybopper to spoil a holiday?.............Send him to Blackpool and enjoy YOUR holiday:)
in NY the Sony Imax cinema might be on his list.
why not set him a wish list of things to do, he can research on the computer and one day do what is on his list and the next day what is on yours.
I cant see an 18yr old liking Washington much, even I got bored there but NY has so much to offer.
get his father to do the "pep talk" before you go -- dont ruin your mother's holiday son or you will be sorry.
Wow, somehow I mis-read "18 year old" as "8 year old" - scratch my first answer entirely!

Thanks dr b, I did wonder!! I must admit, I didn't think I had given the impression he was some sort of awful 18 year old. He is actually a great son but difficult to inspire on "family trips" !
The view from the top of the Rockerfeller Centre at night is something pretty special.

Is he sporty enough to enjoy going to a baseball game or music wise there is Madison Sq gardens.

You could always leave him to be laid back in Central Park and if he has a thing about music culture then he might appreciate Strawberry Fields.
