How do these work? Do you just turn up at the airport and go to the airline and tell them about it? Do they ask for death certificate?

AFAIK they don't exist other than for domestic flights in North America
The airline I work for will get you to your destination as soon as feasibly possible. On your return flight, at check in, you will be asked to produce a copy of the death certificate. It is asked for then as obviously the priority is to get you to your destination with as minimal stress and compassion as possible. On the return things, though probably still upsetting, are a lot more organised plus a certificate would have been issued and available by this time. Hope this helps and all goes well.
