I was in a travel agent earlier today and there was a faint smell of suntan lotion. I put it down to my imagination, but when I was walking out, they have a blow heater above the door and I swear the smell was stronger as I passed under it.

Surely they're not piping hawiian tropic in the system to lure a sale???

They probably are you know, I know they use a similar trick in some supermarkets, wafting out the smell of freshly baked bread!

Creating a brand scent may engage the senses of the consumer, but will it help to sell the product? Doug Glenwright, marketing manager of customer experience at travel agent Thomson, believes it can.

The high-street holiday firm pumps out a coconut aroma in three-quarters of its stores and believes offering a sensory experience pushes customers to book their summer vacation.

Glenwright says the coconut scent evokes the positive feelings of past holidays and puts consumers in the mood to book another getaway.

PMSL, thanks for that Chuck.

That's a bit daft IMO, if you're going to book a holiday, you're going to do it anyway, whether the place smells of coconut or not.
What if you don't like coconut?
wow, I love it!
yeah that does seem a bit weird...especially if you're going in to book a ski holiday!

it must just encourage people more, get them in the holiday mood, imagine themselves on the beach sipping cocktails...and make them spends lots of money :)
Question Author
LOL eash!

Ed, but you wouldn't be in the travel angent in the first place if you weren't at least thinking about a holiday?
haha. well i booked my holiday online, no smell there
I'd be tempted when/if I next go in there to say really loud "What is that smell? It's gross and making me feel sick. I'm leaving"

Just to see what their reaction would be!

lol
Question Author
PMSL!!

I dare you to do that....go in and pretend you're booking the most expensive holiday going....1st class all the way and just when you're about to pay for it do what you said.

Report back to me with the reaction LOL xx
But make sure to do it in one of the stores that is pumping the smell out, otherwise the poor person serving you might be a little offended!
Question Author
hahahaha, good point, Chuck!
That is a good point. I think I will try it though just for a laugh. Will let you know :-)
Have a good holiday Laki, am so jealous x
