as far as i know, no. When i was there, there were soldiers manning the border. In fact i think if you have a stamp for south in passport, you cant go to the north at all
I could be wrong tho
It is now possible. A colleague went on honeymoon to Kyrenia in N Cyprus by flying into Larneca and driving up to the green line in Nicosia to cross.
I don't believe you can take a Cyprus-registered hire car through.
Well, the answer is sort of yes; if you're going on a package, there are companies who will fly you to Larnaca and bus you into the North, though the legality of these operations is under scrutiny at the moment. If you're travelling independently, the answer is effectively no, as there is no public transport across the Green Line. Technically you can drive a hire car over, but only for the day - you can't stay overnight north of the Green Line - and even then many hire companies here in the Republic of Cyprus exclude use of their vehicles in the North in their hire agreements.

Bednobs, it's the other way round; when you go into the North you get an entry visa on a separate slip of paper which you keep in your passport until you return to the South, and entry stamps in your passport are largely irrelevant, especially since you don't get them anyway these days when travelling within the EU. If, however, you have at any time entered Northern Cyprus and had an entry stamp in your passport rather than on a separate sheet, you will NOT under ANY circumstances be permitted to enter the Republic of Cyprus, however and wherever you arrive.

Much easier if you live here - I can drive up to my nearest Green Line crossing point, about half an hour away, and nip over any time I like for up to a month at a time! But that's because I'm not driving a hire car.......
