Strictly speaking, a UK national does not require a passport to enter Northern Ireland (because it is part of the UK), but photographic ID or a passport may be required by the airline or ferry company concerned - see http://www.discovernorthernireland.com/faqs/
you don't. you need photographic id, a passport being one form of this.
