Normally the passport needs to be valid for 3 months after the expected return date and for some countries 6 months.
You can check with the embassy but I suggest that as your trip is not far off you apply for a new passport ASAP.
All foreign nationals (except nationals of Nepal and Bhutan) require a visa to enter India. When applying for a visa one of the requirements is a passport valid for at least 6 months. The visa starts from the date of issue and not date of travel. If your passport and visa is valid for the duration of your travel and back to UK then you can travel with that passport.

PIO cardholders do not require a Visa as the valid card along with their passport entitles them to travel to India.

Visa costs for UK nationals: Tourist and Business visa: 30 (multiple-entry; six month); 50 (multiple-entry; one year). Transit: 8 (single/double-entry).
Passport valid for at least six months required by all nationals - so yes you DO need a new passport - get a new passport ASAP then apply for the visa. Then go to the Indian Embassy where personal applications can normally be processed the same day
yes you do, get the new passport asap then apply for visa, there are some horror stories about visas for India in the travel section on the Daily Telegraph today in the feedback section so take note.
London seems the easiest place to get one, but thats means big travel expense for some people.
Get cracking right now, take passport to Post Office and do the fast track to renew, then you are on your own to get the visa, personally I would give a visa agency the second job, but if you are going in Nov you have left all this rather late.
good luck.
The queues at the Indian embassy are horrendous. You need to q up from about 6am (I kid you not) to get a ticket for an appointment later in the day.

Get there at 5.30am with an ipod, a good book and a coffee. Its worth it.

Please take the advice. If you get there after about 7.45 you have zero chance of seeing someone that day (unless you bribe somone in the q ahead of you which I did - but it cost me 50 quid).

Unsure about the passport bit to be honest but that is my experience of the situation. I'm writin gthis from delhi so IO know what I'm tng about (I finnally renewed my visa on the 3rd go)..

Good luck
