how many letters? you'll probably find someone who's done it already in Quizzes & Puzzles
Your question is difficult to answer in that in a way they are the same, in that they are used to defend an area. An Earthwork is what is usually a collapsed fort. A ditch is dug, usually on a high spot (although it can be on an open area), and the earth is piled on the inside, it is likely that a fence type wall is built in front of the piled earth, the earth acts as a walkway, so that the defenders can hurl stones or spears, and be protected by the wall. These are also known as hillforts, and can be of different sizes. One of the largest being Maiden Castle, near Dorchester in Dorset.

I hope this answers your question?
The answer was Sconce if this is from one of the weekend Telegraphs .
Fortification. a small detached fort or defense work
I'm so sorry, I thought it was a history question, not one to answer a crossword puzzel. Though sconce is not a term usually used in archaeology books.
the real clue is in the question, 1rovert: Daily Telegraph General Knowledge Crossword (for those in the know!) But fear not, your answer was of interest to me.
Not your fault at all 1rovert...It's only that I noticed the heading which is DTGKC...Daily telegraph general knowledge crossword ! I had never heard of it either and spent ages looking for it .

...these Q's are best posted in Q&P notalot regardless of subject matter and you will usually find your answers or some kind soul will give you the answer.
