I've been Googling to try and help you, but haven't found anything on the Essex side, apart from Maldon which could sound like maiden. Otherwise there is Maidenhead, but this is in Berkshire. I'll keep looking for you though.

thanks jules. this place does exist, I went there some years ago but didn't pay much attention at the time but am sure it is no more than 40 mins from london.
thanks for your efforts,
alf.
Maldon is about 35-40 mins from London, depending which way you go. If driving you'd leave M25 at Junction 28 and go down the A12 and then join the A414.
Sorry - don't know what I'm playing at there! Ignore the first link, if you put maiden into the second link then Maidenhead Court comes up, but click on the little arrow next to it and all the other places that start with maiden come up, can't see one in Essex though.
Question Author
thanks for all your efforts, have now come to the conclusion that I got the name back to front, confused it with a place name that I had seen called maidenbower, near crawley. so the place I want has the word BOWER in it. sorry all, kept us all busy for a while, so a name with bower or a word sounding the same, definetely on the outskirts of london.
thanks, alf.
hey thundercrack

I know there is a place in essex/romford called Havering Atte Bower. Sound right?
Question Author
thanks stellababe, thats the one.! the reason I couldn't remember it was because the name was told to me by a cockney chap, although I am one myself, ( I now live in lincs) the name didn.t ring a bell, but I've got it now.
thanks, alf.
