I will be driving from LA to Las Vegas and back again (4 days later) - i'm not only interested in the quickest suggested route but would prefer the most scenic route . Any suggestions ?

Depending on your definition of scenic, I reckon. I live close to there, SE Arizona, and am familiar with the land.

From LA you could drive south to San Diego and east to the Colorado River, Yuma, Arizona. From there, north along the river to Laughlin, Nevada or Bullhead City, Arizona. Ther you can split and go into Nevada and on to Vegas. Or you can go to Kingman, Arizona and on to Vegas, a tad more scenic, in my opinion.

But, if time is of no matter, head from LA toward Carson City Nevada and Reno. Then drop down to Vegas from the Northwest.

I would call the second optin more scenic but I like desolate Desert and would chose the Colorado River Route.

Dear King Normie,

fantastic help, thanks

Do you have a rough estimate of time for the alternative routes you suggesT ?
I have driven to Las Vegas from LA and also from Phoenix. Direct drive from LA is dreadful, boring, hot & very unscenic and I seem to remember it takes about 7 hours (there is a speed limit). Drive from Phoenix is marginally better but not much. Better to Fly - get there quick & easy. The most scenic drive in California is north along Big Sur & then on to Carmel, Monterey, 17 mile drive & finally San Francisco.
I have driven for Vegas to La and back on Interstate 15 and found the majority of it to be quite scenic (each to their own) and did the journey in four hours, I think it was approx 270 miles which was mainly Interstate.
