"The Rosetta Stone" software is meant to be about the best there is. But it's expensive.

I am a language teacher and I find Michel Thomas's language learning series on CD hard to beat for beginners! It is inexpensive (indeed, the Mail on Sunday was giving them away with each paper some weeks ago) and there are no text books to read! All you do is listen and repeat! Grammar is learned without you realising it.
