When I go to Tenerife in April I will have 5 months remaining on my passport, is this ok as a friend told me that I need at least 6 months! Please help!

You'll be absolutely fine. I went to Lanzarote last year on a passport due to expire a month later, and had no bother.

If in any doubt you can renew your passport up to NINE months before it runs out, and they credit your new passport with any remaining months. See http://www.passport.gov.uk/passport_renewing_w hen.asp
I am sure I have read that a passport that has less than 6 months left to run *may* cause a problem. Why not get in renewed anyway? Far easier to renew a passort in date than waiting til it's run out anyway - be quick!
