EU or not, you won't be able to go anywhere on an expired passport.

I'm certain you can actually travel to some EU countries with an expired passport, wasn't sure if Belguim was one of them. thanks any way!
It will cost you but you can get a new passport on the same day if you make an appointment in advance and go to a Passport Office. See http://www.passport.gov.uk/passport_renewing_w hen.asp#urgent
Hi Riz1, I wonder if you're thinking of the Schengen Agreement which allows people to cross borders without a passport. Unfortunately the UK isn't part of the agreement.
This from the Embassy website...

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Holders of British passports, describing them as "British Citizens", do not require visas to enter Belgium. The passport should be valid for at least six months.

Hmm I don't believe that Brirtish Embassy website.

It's the Belgians you need to ask, not the British. And the Belgian London Embassy website just says a valid passport, which is what I would expect.

You can (or could - I haven't been able to verify it recently and the sources that claimed it have disappeared from the web) travel to Spain on a recently expired passport.

You can return home on an expired passport (although you may get told off by immigration and the airline at the far end may object) or even without one; although you'll be detained until they can verify your identity, you can't be deported.
I'm pretty certain that travelling around Europe or re-entering the UK without a valid passport just to make a point of principle is not worth any of the resulting hassle or inconvenience (well not to me anyway).

Travel between UK & Ireland and the other EU states requires a valid National ID card or passport. Until we are forced into having an ID card the only option is the valid passport.

I've actually got a very similar question: my younger son's passport has expired (he's 6 and the passport expired earlier this year). We're due to travel to Germany (from Dover to Dunkirk by ferry) on Sunday and I'm totally panicking as the children have been looking forward to seeing their Grandma. Would it be possible to still travel with the expired passport but taking the birth certificate?
