Is it possible to get on a cargo ship - pay them - and sail to karachi (or the country that the cargo is destined to). If it is - how would I go about doing this and do people commonly do it?

Michael Palin seemed to manage it ok. I think you'd need to go thru the Ship's Agent.. You don't say where in the world you are, try Lloyds List as a starter or this link http://www.lloydsll.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pa

Don't forget usual precautions [tell someone on shore when you're sailing, Vessel name, port & likley date of arrival etc, a contact number of who you booked it through] Bon Voyage!!]
It is possible and also a popular form of travel limited only by the number of passenger places available on any vessel. There are companies that specialise in organising such trips. Here's the contact details for 2 of them.

I reckon you need to do a bit more research before you set off on this endeavor amoeba... especially if you're planning to make a TV programme about it!
