Is it just me or does anyone else notice a hell of a lot of people as soon they get on a long(ish) train journey, they settle in and out comes the food and then more and even more... They knew they were on a long journey, wouldn't take a lot to plan a meal in advance! As you can tell it winds me up! Rant over!!

Did it not occur to you that many people don't just eat a meal, step out of their front door and onto a waiting train? Maybe they had to leave hone at 6am, travel half an hour to a connecting train stationm sit on a cramped rush hour commutor train with standing room only, then wait at the mainline station for an hour or so for their express train on which they had booked a comfortable table seat a month in advance knowing they could actually get chance to eat in comfort. Unless of course one of the other four people sitting at the table has brought a laptop and intends banging on the keys for the 2.5 hour journey. now that is annoying.

Fair point dot - laptops almost as bad as the people who have their mobiles set to max volume, getting calls every ten minutes! I dunno - guess I'm just a grump when on the train!
I'm a train driver, and I have no problem with people eating on trains, just wish they'd take their rubbish with then when they get off.
Oooh country_boy, aren't you grumpy??? It doesn't really bother me.xxx

Yeah katie I am hehe - especially when they can't eat without opening their mouths to speak on their mobiles, then dump their litter on the seat that's booked for the stop where they get off. I don't get out much you know!! hope all good with you sweetheart xx
All is good, thank you. Haven't seen you on here for ages! Where have you been???xxx

Been on a course in Guildford, nice to be home and get back to the usual sunday night roast! Next time I'll book a course in Shropshire ;-) xx
When we go on Holiday I start eating the sandwiches before we have left the road we live in !!!

Are we there yet ????
If I go to an amusement park I'll take sandwiches and eat them while I'm queuing. Similar thing. Trying to manage time efficiently
they knew they were on along journey, so planned in advance and packed a snack or two...

this is a free world.. there are no restrictions on the times we can eat CB..

:-)

or twelve!! I guess I was unlucky on the people I sat opposite! Just made me look around and almost everyone who got on, sat down and pulled out food. Was quite strange, then again it was around lunchtime - doh!!
It's the muslims fault.

Mind you some of their eating habits were pretty minging!
I used to commute weekly between Manchester and London for work and sitting on the train was one of the few quiet times I could sit and eat something.

Always very conscientious on trains though, make sure any rubbish is packed up and put in the bin and such.

People who have to chat loudly on mobiles annoy me though, i put my phone on silent or vibrate and only have very brief and quiet conversation if it's absolutely necessary.

Mess on buses annoys me too, esp the free papers you get which end up strewn everywhere and the people who take up a seat and a half to read them.

Another pet hate is guys who have to spread their legs out so you have to perch on half a set and get bashed by everyone coming up and down.

There's also a growing trend of people smoking and smoking dope on buses up here esp which makes me feel sick esp first thing in the morning and it's freezing so the windows are shut. People daren't tell them to stop.

Seen some nasty assaults on buses us here including a comment leading to 5 blokes kicking the **** outta each other and a metal bar (part of the bus) becoming involved. Blood everywhere! On another one two guys ended up going through a window and the police came and about 5 of them had to restrain one of them by pinning him to the ground.

Madness!

That's my rant over :)

Jenna, appreciate your rant... post I mean! What's a nice girl like you, doing in a place like that? I hate trains cos I'm pretty tall, but always aware of legroom with others! Probably why I get grumpy on trains after folding my legs away for hours! Maybe I'm too polite! Glad I live in the country!
Question Author
Oh yeah and I hate it when people sit on the seat by the window and put their bag on the seat next to them, even though there's plenty of overhead storage. Especially when the train is packed and people are standing! The way they pretend not to notice and only oblige when asked!
What on earth are you complaining about? The clue is in the question: "LONG train journey". It is obvious that the whole process of PLANNING a meal in advance is done and fulfilled and executed and brought to fruition by the straightforward and obvious process of HAVING (or buying) a meal on the train. When I've been out for a long day in London I often get some food at Victoria Station when i'm on my way back home in the evening, so that i can eat it on the train on my way home. This (a) provides employment for the food people (b) satisfies my hunger an hour or so earlier than would otherwise be the case when I arrive home. You seem to be implying that it is (a) as a result of a lack of forward-planning (which it isn't) and (b) irritating or anti-social towards other passengers (which it isn't).
I take food/snacks on long train journeys. Sorry, but as long as I don't make a mess and tidy away any rubbish, I don't see how I'm hurting anyone. The food for sale on trains is not that good and way over priced, so it's cheaper all round to organise yourself.
