We are having a family get together at Sherwood Forest next month and have a barbecue outside our chalet. Are these just brick built charcoal pits? would they object if I took my gas barby?

You will receive full details about 2 weeks before you depart, which I seem to remember explains about BBQs among everything else. I think you can hire a BBQ from the supermarket, there are certainly brick BBQ stands outside each villa. I'm fairly certain no other types are acceptable because of the risk of fire, being in a forest 'n' all.
