I haven't been to SF for about 5 years, but the last time we were there it was a three day waiting time to get on a trip.

It could be different now but it may be worth trying to book a trip before you get out there.
blimey, really?

I went there err... about 10 years ago now, but it was Christmas time we didn't have to book at all - just got on a boat and went over.

How how things change.
We went about seven years ago and got straight on a boat. Mid you it was ******* down at the time.
Hi - We went last summer to California, and to San Francisco for a few days. We booked the top tour, inclusive ticket - tour of the city in the morning and we were dropped off at the pier to get the Alcatraz ferry in the afternoon. I would recommend booking in advance, as there was a huge queue trying to get on a ferry without advance booking. It is well worth it - very interesting. I would also recommend the bus tour of the city too - very good. Try www.allsanfranciscotours.com to book tickets online.
Have a great time.
hi
i went approx 2yrs ago and went to one of the stalls and got a ticket for that day...

it just depends on the time and day u go their...
MickLaw, I went last year and you now cannot get onto Alcatraz without booking first. No just turn up and go I'm afraid. Security is also extremely tight and you will need photo ID. Worth it though.
We went in 2001 and although we didn't book in advance we were there early doors and stood in a queue (sorry, a line, in America lol) for about half an hour and subsequently got on the ferry no probs.

Thanks Everyone , I will book my trip online next week , :-)
Worth getting up early and booking the first boat of the day. Island gets busier as the morning progresses.
Oh well jealous! Luved it in SF! Things have changed as we went in 2002 and we just got there paid our money and got on the boat. It is well worth doing and obviously hire the headsets as you get a better feel of it all and things are explained.Obviously enjoy the seals at Pier 39 as they are so funny to watch. We also walked up Lombard Street (the the windy steep street that is used in lots of adverts and films) it is a killer on your legs but bloody amazing. We drove down it just to get a different angle on it. You must go on a tram too, they grind up the steep strreets! Seriously there is loads to do and I wish it was me, I would go there again definately. Enjoy!!!!
