Can anybody advise on, where to stay, and what to see, in Prague. We are a group of forty- somethings, so not too outlandish, just a nice couple of days away on the cheap. Are appartments better value than hotels, not too far from the centre, can you help?.

Sorry to be unable to help right now!!! My parents went to Prague in November. They are in their early 60's and got a really good deal.

At the moment they are in Tenerife - the joys of being retired, eh? They are back on Wednesday so will ask them for some advice and get back to you. All I know is that they did everything online.

BTW - they really enjoyed it.

Prague survived several military conflicts relatively unscathed. Consequently, the buildings offer a wide range of architectural styles. If you go to the tourist office, you can arrange an "Architectural Walk"; a guide will take you on foot round the city centre, pointing these out (Gothic, Neo-Gothic, Renaissance, Art Nouveau, Art Deco etc etc).

you can stay outside the centre - we found the buses excellent.

as far as sightseeing just get yourself to the centre and wander around, a treat round every corner but make sure you get over charles brdige to prague castle (cathedral and such like)

also ask or get a guide book and visit the loretto (i think) - wonderful little nunnery(?) with a great collection of artefacts

you will have a great time !

Take a look at the Hotel Waldstein on the web (Close to the Charles Bridge but on the quieter castle side of the river), they also have an annex with self-catering apartments (large rooms with character - great value). If you book through Ave travel (also on the web, based in prague), they will pick you up at the airport.

We always stay at a little b&b out in the suburbs; public transport in Prague is so good & cheap it's crazy to pay over-inflated prices for city-centre accommodation. There's a hotel with a very good restaurant 4 minutes walk away, and it's only 20 mins by tram (4 mins walk) or 10 mins by metro (7 mins walk) into the centre. Off season we pay something like 8-9 per head per night - and you get the cheapest mini-bar I've ever come across! We're 50-somethings, & it suits us fine. Google for Pension Dana Residence.

As some of the above replies suggest, it is not necessary to stay in the centre. Consider the Pension Klara:

It's just round the corner from a tram stop from where it only takes a few minutes to get to the main tourist areas.
