We’ve just had a letter inviting us to join the above.
Anyone in their local one?
Good points?
Bad points?
Can’t see much of an advantage for us to be honest but would appreciate your opinions. Thanks.
We get quite a lot of information, this week has covered all the local flood warnings, any scams going around, criminal activity in the vicinity so you know what to watch out for.
People ask for recommendations for workman, replies are from people who have actually had work done, and often show pictures.
Goods are offered for sale or free. Missing pets are posted and several have been found by others that have spotted the post.
I’ve been in my local Nextdoor group for ages. Very good for crime reports, recommendations for tradesmen, notifications about immediate problems such as road closures, local for sale and free items. Also lost and found items and pets, upcoming events (when not in lockdown) and help offered and needed.
Lots of videos from CCTV cameras asking for help identifying people either committing a crime or behaving suspiciously.
The sort of useful information we used to get when we actually knew and talked to our neighbours
ours is much the same as barry's. you can get a daily/weekly digest email so it's not bothering you too much. Same sort of stuff as local fb group but a bit more targetted
It used to be called Streetlife and it was a lot better then (IMO) It's OK but as well as the useful stuff, there people who moan a lot on there. As for the recommendations, I`m not sure how honest people are. A lot of people seem to recommend themselves (or their partner, husband etc) so not unbiased. I wouldn`t use my real name on there.
I vaguely recall getting an invitation to join through my door, quite some time ago, and deciding that it wasn't for me. (I think I was put off, in part, by the way that the invitation was worded as a sort of 'limited time offer'. My opinion was that any genuine 'community group' shouldn't be trying to pressurise people into joining in that sort of way).
I take all recommendations with a pinch of salt. As it is a local group I ask if I can see the work that has been done and check the tradesman out elsewhere.
Thank you all.
Yes, this has a code that will expire in a week. And the persons name and address who has mail shotted (nice word) us is also in the letter.
Will give it some thought but probably won’t bother, we have a very comprehensive list of tradespeople ourselves. Not convinces it’s terribly useful for us.
