If I went to Australia and wasn't sure how long I was going for, what would be the cheapest, safest and easiest way to take sufficient money please?

Get a Credit Card which doesn't penalise Cash Withdrawals or Foreign Spending (like the Halifax Clarity Card) - then use it to pay bills and get cash - whilst regularly clearing the amount you owe on the card by transfers from your UK Current Account.

Why can't you use your normal bank debit card in their ATMs?

Because it will cost you up to about 6% every time you do that bhg481.
when you say you dont know how long - are you talking of the difference between 2 and 4 weeks, or 2 weeks and a year?
Do Travellers' cheques still exist?

Thank you all very much. I'm talking the difference between around a month and 3 months and I didn't know whether to change currency here or there, or travellers cheques (which I don't know if they still exist either) or just use a card etc. I know there's a new thing advertised about sending money abroad but I can't find the article now.
Sainsbury's do a "cash passport" which you can load up with various foreign currencies - and then use as a debit card/cash withdrawl card
