may depend on your journey - for some destinations, anytime returns are not offered.
but then I wouldn't use trainline. prefer to use the website of the train company providing the service.

ok cheers just got on to the train company and they don't do open returns, for my journey, what a shower!
Not unusual if it is a short haul journey. If they did the price would probably be the cost of two singles.
Question Author
happy with that JD Is it too much to ask not to know when you want to return?
As has been suggested, open return tickets aren't sold for shorter journeys; you have to buy two singles.

PS: As has been stated here on AB countless times, you should NEVER use TheTrainline website anyway. It can't offer anything which isn't available on the National Rail website, charges MORE than going through the National Rail website (because of the service charge) and has been known to issue tickets which aren't valid for travel at all!

This is the ONLY place to look for rail tickets

(If you insist upon using a third party site though, RedSpottedHanky is probably the best because you can earn loyalty points for discounted travel in future: http://www.redspottedhanky.com/ )
Have to agree with Chico re Trainline. When I worked for NRES they were the bane of our life. We got the blame for their incompetence.
