ahh so its just spelt differently ??
although they also say check where we say bill in a restaurant for example.
To illustrate Prudie's answer...

Yes but there he's asking for the bill not a payment.
It's the waiter that should be saying, "Check please ?"
Well, no OG... he's asking for the dinner bill and the waiter would simply say "I'll be right back" after taking the proffered payment to bring him a reciept or change.

However, often the diner would take the 'check' given by the waiter to a check out station to fulfill the payment... A small but universally understood signal as to which method is to be used here is if the 'check' is laid on the table, one would take it to the cahier themselves, but if the 'check' is enclosed in a wallet like cover or if it's presented on a small metal platter, that indicates the waiter expects to pick up the payment.
That may be what he would say in practice, but not what he logically should say.
a Brit pays his bill with a cheque, an American pays his check with a bill.
lol jno !
jno's especially sharp this day! As an aside, very few American businesses will accept personal checks here for payment and post signs so stating...
Clanad...it is getting increasingly difficult to use cheques over here as well,
I can assure you !
