I`ve stayed at Ceybank Rest. I think it used to be the Governer`s mansion. I don`t remember a racecourse but I was only passing through and stayed just one night. I remember it as looking lovely from the outside but a bit dated inside. It was perfectly acceptable for the £10 pppn we paid and the breakfast and tea was good. That sounds like Ceybank Rest (which used to be the Heritage Hotel) at Nuwara Eliya:

Reviews (very mixed) here:

(One of them recommends the rooms overlooking the racecourse and the map on the right of that page confirms the hotel's proximity to the course).

There are lots of old colonial hotels in Sri Lanka though. Do you mean the Galle Face Hotel? That is a fairly well known old colonial place. I stayed there as well. 'Faded Glory' is how I would describe it but lovely and atmospheric.
If I didn`t touch type, I would look at the keys and realise that I should have spelled `Governor`s` correctly. Anyway, is this your hotel?

What a difference 10 years makes (which is how long it`s been since I have stayed there)
