actually, there's a train to London Bridge that's slightly quicker (and much cheaper) than the Gatwick Express - if it's London you're looking for?

I am staying at the Park Plaza County Hall near Waterloo station, sorry I didn't make this clear in the original question.
I have since been told to go to Victoria Station and then get a taxi to the hotel,and this way may be the most suitable

Victoria is slightly closer to Waterloo than London Bridge is; but the London Bridge trains (First Capital Connect, I think) are still a minute or two quicker and a lot cheaper.

The Gatwick Express goes direct from London Victoria to Gatwick Airport.

correction, London Bridge is nearer to Waterloo, says Google. Win-win.
