Boy #2 is 9 soon and instead of a party (which he is not very enthusiastic about) he has been offered the option of a present and a day out (or a big present). We are currently looking at Legoland (when it opens in March) but want to give him some other options. We are prepared for up to a 2 1/2 journey (one way) and have a budget of up to £200 (for two adults and five children - ages 12, 9, 7 and two 5 year olds). I have looked at the Snowdome in Telford but the little one can't do everything and some of the adult-to-child ratios won't work for us. Anyone got any ideas (he is prepared for a wait until places open for the new season) - we have done most of the obvious ones. Please don't suggest Wookey Hole ;( Thank you.

Hi Sher, how about Diggerland, I bought my nephews tickets for this and their parents took them. All the family had a blast .

I will have a look at diggerland. Forgot to mention that we live in Hereford.
One of the RAF museums perhaps?
I can only vouch for Hendon as I've been there a couple of times - it's excellent. Assuming you live in the Midlands that might be a bit too far but there is another in Cosford (Salop). Both are free entry btw.

Thanks AP, used to go to Hendon on an almost monthly basis when we lived in Aylesbuy and have been to Cosford (well worth a visit if you are in the area, much bigger than Hendon).
My suggestion is slightly over your 2.5 hour journey limit but it might still be worth considering:

If you catch the 0710 train from Hereford (on Saturday 19 January, 6 days after your son's birthday) you can be in London at 1029 (or the 0617 train gets you there at 0929). The 1821 train back gets you to Hereford at 2135. Those are direct services, with no changes. The total return fare, for 2 adults and 5 children, is £105 including unlimited travel on London Underground and bus services.

That would let you explore the wonderful Science Museum, especially 'LaunchPad' (which is packed with things to do and buttons to press) and pay a visit to the moving dinosaur at the Natural History Museum next door. Both museums are free but your budget would also allow you to pay for the few charged exhibits (such as the IMAX cinema at the Science Museum). With careful planning you could also squeeze in a bit of sightseeing.

(I've just checked: You could also use the same services, at the same fare, on the day before your son's birthday but Sunday services don't run early enough for a trip on the big day itself).
Buenchico you are truly a treasure!

Thanks for the detailed response Buenchico, will add it to the suggestions (personally hate London with a passion and three of them have been to the attractions you have listed although it was a while ago). Teeny weeny bit odd that you know the boy's actual birthday though (his own dad would be pushed to remember the exact date).
>>>Teeny weeny bit odd that you know the boy's actual birthday

Not really ;-)

Good grief, that was two years ago. Even I don't remember posting that! You've either got a brilliant memory or you need to get out more, ;)
Actually your current post made me feel old. I thought "bloody 'ell, it can't really be two years since Sherrardk was posting about a 7th birthday, can it?". So I googled it and found that time is passing far too quickly!
Chris, that is creepy, and not in a nice way!
Mystery tour?
Question Author
Wait till March when the things turn 5 or July when boy #1 becomes a teenager!
>>>when boy #1 becomes a teenager

Yes, that's something to look forward to ;-)

Chris, you are a treasure x
Have you been to Drayton Manor theme park in Tamworth? Lots of rides for younger and older children. We had a good day out there.
