Does anyone know if you need this when going to Europe? Is it essential? If so, when taking the completed form to the post office, do you have to go in person or can someone go for you AND do you need to take any ID with you?

E111

I took my forms in myself, but as long as the forms (you know there's 2 parts to it I assume) are filled out and signed, I'm sure you could ask somebody else to take it in for you. I wouldn't go to Europe without it, just to be on the safe side.
oh - no ID was asked for, or proof of nat ins numbers etc.

thanks both of you!

we went to france for a weekend and didn't bother with insurance or E111.  My son developed appendicitis and had to have an operation.  When he was discharged, the hospital asked us for 1800!!

Fortunately, they let us fax an E111 to them. - Phew!
