Flying to USA do I need a (visa) ESTA or whatever the name is now?

Maybe going to the USA on a last minute cancellation
Do I need an ESTA or the current name for it and how soon do you have to apply also is there a cost involved as it was free when I went 3 years ago.

You should apply at least 72 hours prior to travel.

You can apply after that - but there is a risk you won't get a decision in time to fly.
