Myself and 5 other girls are having a long weekend in October to Barcelona and would like to stay in an apartment.

I've been there for the day and know that Las Rambles is the most popular place to stay..but can anyone recommend what other areas close by to there and if anyone knows of any good websites to rent out apartments..

Thanks.xx

Sorry, I can`t (it`s a long time since I have been there) but all I would say is don`t stay at Las Ramblas. It`s the pits. Get a Lonely Planet book and check out your options or research on Tripadvisor.

www.apartmentsramblas.com Just try these or travelrepublic, Las Rambles is not the pits as 237SJ said, it's a great place to watch the world go by and take part, at the very bottom near the sea go across the walkway to Port Veil to eat, it's cheaper and there's a great beach on your left, a beautiful city with so much to see and enjoy.
Another suggestion would be to stay in Sitges, 36 K south of Barcelona and take the train into the city. Trains run every 15 min and put you right into the heart of the Ramblas. If this is an option, try www.Stay Sitges.com, which lists apartments in Sitges, some of which are quit reasonable. They will show you maps of where the apts are located. Just make sure you are close to the train station.
I too would seriously steer clear of Las Ramblas for accommodation - it's a great place to look at the market stalls and street performers, and there are some good cafes to have lunch, but it is also rife with pickpockets and hotel thieves preying on tourists. Don't bother with the cheaper hotels around Las Ramblas as a lot of them double as brothels.

jrtv's given some good websites, so check them out.

Last time I went to Barcelona I stayed in one of the suburbs, Gornal, which was much cheaper and not at all touristy. The brilliant thing about Barcelona is that it has an excellent public transport system. Last time we went, we used the tube trains to get to the city centre. They cost next to nothing and were clean and punctual.

Hope you enjoy your visit. I'm very envious. We've been there about six times and still haven't seen everything.
Have you thought about looking on sites like booking.com or last minute.com, they list self catering apartments as well as hotels/b&bs, you may find something you like there
