Hello! I bought an amazon kindle today, but do not have a wifi and do not want to wait until tomorrow to find a hotspot. I do have a laptop with a dongle connection - can i connect my kindle to laptop via USB and get it registered and set up this way and then buy books or does it NEED wifi?

I was downloading books from Kindle onto my laptop before I had a Kindle. When I got the Kindle and plugged it in it seemed to sync with the books I already had on the laptop. You have to download a programme from Amazon onto your laptop first and then buy your books (loads free!) and plug in your kindle and away you go. And if I can do it anyone can. I am officially roadkill on the information super highway. Have fun and enjoy your new toy!

Just had a look at this pdf file (Page 14 is where you should be reading)

It appears on your PC as an external hard drive. You cannot read a book when in USB mode though. I'm learning because my Mother has bought one from Amazon, and I'll have to transfer Books to it.
Yep, do it just as you describe using the USB supplied - may need unplugging from the mains socket.
