My friend recently went to cape town from schipol airport in holland, he said the flight lasted 6 hours. So i suppose gatwick to cape town would be about 5 and a half hours.

No, the flight time is approximately 11 hours.

For example, if you leave London at 19.35, you'll arrive in Cape Town at 08.05 (local time) the next day.

There are only 2 hours time difference to consider - I flew this route in 2003, and the overnight flight means no jet lag to contend with.

It took us 11 hrs from Schipol to Jo'berg - and the plane went on to Cape town from there.
Heathrow to Jo'Burg is around 11 hours, expect another hour on top of that for Cape Town (assuming flying direct).
i flew to cape town in 2003 and it took us 11 hrs but try to get a night flight as no jet lag the nest day

Jet lag does not come into it as you are flying North - South with very little change in time zones.
