Ms, although I hate that!
"Dear Bitch" ???

Seriously, Ms. or Madame and then remember the proper sign off depending which route you choose.
if you have the name, cant you just use that?
ie dear jane brown
i prefer ms to mrs.
Ms.
Dear Sir or Madame, yours faithfully and a Dear Ms, Name, yours siuncerely.
↑ oops
or sincerely ? :)
sincerely - can't spell today!
Ms
ps, don't put Madame - unless you are writing to the proprietress of a brothel
Either,

Dear Jane Brown,
Dear Ms Brown, or,
Dear Madam......(no 'e', unless you know she's French).
You should only ever start a letter with "Dear Bitch" if you are writing to either my mother in law or Sharon Shoesmith
lol Mrs O
I'm with bednobs - Dear Jane Brown, or Dear John Smith is perfectly acceptable.
" in the old days " school children were taught to address letters with dear sir/madam. unless they were friends or family.
I'd go along with "Dear Ms. .......(name)". I think it's so much more polite to use a title (Mr., Mrs., Ms - whatever). I hate it when people address me by just my first & surnames and don't put "Mrs." in front. (One of my best friends is a gross offender - I hope she reads this!!). At least the thing about "Ms" (even though I don't like it) is that if you don't know whether a woman is married or not (and how she prefers to be addressed), you're pretty safe with "Ms".
you want your best friend to refer to you as "mrs ....."???
lol
No, bedknobs!! I didn't make myself clear, did I? It's when she sends me stuff in the post - she just addresses the envelope with first name & surname. I think it's impolite. I've opened a can of worms, haven't I???
