Being put on 'standby' for a ferry crossing

when you are put on standby (i.e. just turning up hoping that someone else won't) - does anyone know the numbering system - for example L6? Whereabouts in the standby queue are you? anyone know?? many thanks in anticipation!

Well I would imagine each ferry company - and possibly each route - has its own system.

As a wild guess L6 could mean 6th in the queue for large cars.
