From where?
To the best of my knowledge, the only ferries to France are from the UK, so the answer to VHG's question seems obvious!

EU law requires all member states to allow the free movement of all EU citizens who can actually prove such citizenship (by either showing a passport or a national ID card). So your valid Portuguese ID card is all that you require to move freely between any of the 27 member states.

There are ferries to France from Ireland, Italy (Sardinia) and various ports in North Africa

Doesn't really affect your answer though....
