What's in it for them as a company? Is it that if they build up a large user base the advertisers will follow?

However, just like this site, people who use ad-blocking software won't see those ads. (Perhaps that's why you're not seeing any?). You can also avoid the ads by using an email client (such as Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail or Thunderbird).
GMX simply trusts that enough people will use their services via webmail (and with no ad-blockers in place) for them to continue to attract advertisers.
Other free email services often append advertising to either your incoming or outgoing mail. That's mildly irritating with incoming mail but really annoying with outgoing mail (as you're effectively sending spam to people you might want to impress, such as potential employers!).
