What's in it for them as a company? Is it that if they build up a large user base the advertisers will follow?

Like this site, GMX places ads down the side of the screen when you use their service. However, just like this site, people who use ad-blocking software won't see those ads. (Perhaps that's why you're not seeing any?). You can also avoid the ads by using an email client (such as Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail or Thunderbird).

GMX simply trusts that enough people will use their services via webmail (and with no ad-blockers in place) for them to continue to attract advertisers.

Other free email services often append advertising to either your incoming or outgoing mail. That's mildly irritating with incoming mail but really annoying with outgoing mail (as you're effectively sending spam to people you might want to impress, such as potential employers!).

TY. The ad blocker must be preventing me from seeing the entire picture.
I've been using gmx for several mailboxes during the last few months without problems so far, so I hope they continue to thrive. Just to confirm that outgoing messages do NOT include adverts, at least they don't in the messages that I send between those mailboxes.
