How do they create the patterns / shadings on horses fur? Have often seen lines with two shades of colour on either side. Today I have seen stars as a pattern and chequered as a pattern. How do they make them? Cheers. Mitchell

I thought they used a stencil and brushed the coats in the different directions.

I don't know about patterns. but they clip horses' coats for cleanliness and appearnace - so it wouldn't be hard to simply make a design, like with a young man's hair.

I think you're talking about quarter markers achieved by using stencils specifically designed for the job in hand.

There are many companies that now offer these quarter markers. One of the main ones where you can see a massive range of designs can be found on www.quartermarkerco.com.

ps. Just to say I have no connection with this company - I mentioned it to show you all the various patterns that can be obtained. There are other companies available, as they say!
As a child I spend a lot of time in the stables of the police-horses in The Hague. They used a stencil to brush a checkered pattern on the rump.
You can either use a stencil, or you can groom the horse thoroughly first and the brush the hair on the quarters in different directions - on a horse with a good glossy coat they look very smart.

Easiest way is to use a stencil. Horse still needs to be nicely groomed and shiny then you brush the hair the wrong way with a damp brush.
