I have had a desk top PC for 7 years now with Broad Band.
I wish to get a lap top to do away with all the wires that are a clutter and a nuisance with the cat always biting the wires etc.

Do I have to inform provider ?
Do I use the existing modem and phone line.
I would like to take lap top to any room in the house (Not outside)
What do I do.
Any advice would be welcome.
PLain language please.
Thank you.

Ask your broadband provider for a wireless router, they may provide you one for free, if not buy a wireless router.

This is only true if you get a router (a router includes a modem).

If you dont get a router you can just plug your laptop into the modem (with a wire) in place of the dekstop PC and use the internet.

In fact it may be best to do this BEFORE you set up the router as this proves the laptop works ok with the internet.
tobergill I have just got my first laptop and I kept my phone line and my wireless router which I had for my desktop. I bought a Macbook Air and when I got it home and unpacked and switched it on it took on a life of its own. I am useless at setting things up and was a bit worried but it found the wireless router without any help from me and and I was on line in less than five minutes. Make sure you have a WIRELESS router and ask your provider if you are not sure. Mine works anywhere in my home and doesn't have to be plugged into anything except to recharge the battery.
