Technophobe JD_here!

I have just discovered that my Panasonic television is equipped to take a Dongle. Would someone be good enough to tell me
a) what is a Dongle, and
b) what are the advantages of paying the best part of £100 to stick one of these things in the back of my TV?

Presumably it allows you to connect your TV to the Internet.
