For the past few days my screen is scrolling up and down and I'm finding it difficult to stop it on the item I want it to. Any help would be appreciated.

Is it an optical mouse (with a red light underneath)?

Are you using it on a shiny surface, or one that's become shiny with use?

has the mouse got fluff up its hole (where the light is)?

Eliminate those. Then we'll see what's up next. :-)
I'm going for....

Are you on a laptop with a touchpad? and if so does it only scroll if you use the far right hand side of the touchpad?
... or the hydraulic ram in your office chair is faulty.
Is hydraulic ram your pet name for your avatar?
No, that's 'Tex', but I see what you did there. :-))
I wish I had studied Zoology. Hydraulic rams and mice with fluff up their holes. What have I missed?

I'm on a laptop with a touch pad and r/l click bars, Sometimes it goes crazy spinning up and down. I think the right side of the pad gets used more. I'm a bit of a duffer at mechanics of things.
I had the same problem. Buy a mouse Gran, you'll never look back.

Should this be on Animals and nature? I wouldn't help a mouse with fluff up it's hole, nor have I an hydraulic ram, just casters on my armchair. :¬].
The far right side of touchpads is normally set to be a scroll area, so either, stay away from that side of the touchpad, switch off the scroll action on the touchpad (control panel > mouse and have a look through the options as it varies) or, as mike says.... get a mouse instead.
Chuck, might reinstalling the Synaptics drivers cure it?

I never use my touchpad, so that's purely a guesstimate.
Question Author
Reinstalling synaptics- would that be for an engineer to do? Thinking about it it has been an on-going problem since I got this lappy not quite as bad as this but the problem seems to come and go.
No, you could download the drivers and reinstall them. I just wanted to know from Chuck if it might be a cure, or if the touchpad is likely to be FUBAR.

Thanks naz, I don;t have a clue about FURBAR. I've looked at the settings for the mouse on the control panel but it doesn't mean much to me. I've also looked at the
pointing device properties but it just asks 'tap to click' which is ticked.
Really askyourgran. I don't think there is anything wrong with your screen. You're just a bit early in the season with your Xmas sherry indulgence.
AYG, I have the same problemm which I asked about a couple of weeks ago, but had no joy. Mine is STILL going mad although I DO have amouse which stopped working. I know what you mean about the scrolling though; and it's awful when you try to copy and paste yes? The worst is when I am trying to use Streetview in the Google Maps, it just spins round and round and I can't stop it. I'll watch your question to see if there's a solution. I've looked at the stuff on the control panel and as you say it all looks fine.
Bump for Chuck, re: new Synaptics drivers ...
I hate touchpads............I use a non-fluffy mouse.
Sorry Naz....

Assuming it is a synaptics touchpad then installing the drivers will give access to the setting to turn of the scroll area on the right of the pad, but not all touchpads are made by synaptics so AYG would be better going to the laptop manufacturers website and downloading the touchpad drivers from there (they all will let you disable the scroll area regardless of who they are made by)
