When using the magic wand in the above prog.how do you get minute control of where you want to "trace round"?If I go beyond where I want to go I can't get it to retrace "its footsteps".If a want to go round a face that's fairly near the edge of a photo the tracer line goes to the edge.Thanks!!

Have you tried zooming in to provide a sufficiently large gap between the face and the edge?

In Photoshop you can increase/decrease the tolerance of the wand so it picks up less/more of the area you are concerned with. Or use the lasso tool and add/increase from your selection that way...

Lassoo Tool, as snags suggested ... zoom right in, click around the object, you can BackSpace to undo any stray selections as you go.

Also, use the spellchecker to make sure you spell Lasso correctly, lol

Thanks snags that's a good site,but I'm trying to trace round my grandsons head.It's similar to the Mickey Mouse silhouette on that site I want to do the large circle only but it keeps following the two smaller ones as well.(or in my case something in the background)I can't find the way to bring it back into line again.

How about using the freehand tool (or one of the other selection tools) to subsequently deselect the bits that you don't want selected?
