"you can't get two NEW players with the same problem, can you?"
Unlikely, but you don't mention what kind of CD she is trying to play (CDR,CD,CDRW) or if she's tried it with more than one disk.
The thing to do here is try a CD in another player then put in the new player. If it happens again then it is definately the player. Take it back to the shop with the CD you are trying to play and get them to try.
Also is there any bits of plastic packing in the draw that should be removed??
I has a player that had a plastic thing in the drawer for transport.

The CD's are pre-recorded pro jobs. I've tried them on a stand alone player with no problem but on the portable (new)one that's the trouble.I understand from"'er indoors" that the stoppage occurs at different stages with different CD's and not always at the same spot. Can't see any signs of missed plastic. Thanks to you both!!!
