my 9 year old was amazed when she saw someone on the tv using a drawing tablet thingy (sorry - don't know what they're called) and i would love to get her one for christmas.
Does anyone know the proper name for them, and if there are any suitable for children?

You'll probably need some suitable art software as well as the graphics tablet. For a 9-year-old (or, indeed, for anyone other than a professional designer) the Trust TB-5300 is probably as good and anything else. It's well-reviewed here:

and sells for just £21.60:

(Check out major supermarkets though. At one time Asda was selling it for £15).

Artrage2 (a $20 download) might be suitable software:

PS: I've just found out that this FREE software supports graphics tablets:

chris - you ASTOUND me.

Thank you so much. ♥
If you want a really good graphics tablet, you won't find one better than one made by Wacom.
Their 'Bamboo' model is a great one to start with.

If you're using a PC, you already have 'Paint' to get you in the game.
