Wonder if anyone can help - my IPhone was playing up so I swtiched it off and then back on and all that happens is the little apple picture appears and then it switches back off. Is it a goner?

silly question I know but is it charged fully?
Question Author
Yes it's charged - it started acting weird (giving me the weather in New York when I asked for Hereford, etc) - I've recently had it unlocked, wonder if that has killed it?
in the instructions which you can access online at the apple website, there is how to do soft and hard resets on your phone, its worth a try. mine plays up from time to time because I leave it switched on for weeks at a time, a reset has always sorted it so far. have it plugged in to charge when you do it, the battery may be extremely low
Question Author
When I find the info - should I be doing a hard or soft reset?
try the reset (press and hold the home button and the sleep/wake button) then do a restore via itunes.
soft first, as per cazzzz instructions and if that doesn't work, try a hard
only do the restore if you think you are still having problems
Question Author
I've done the reset thing (holding both buttons) and nothing has happened - any idea how I do the other sort of reset?
did you press and hold both until it reboots?
Go to the apple website and look in iphone support
Question Author
Yes - the apple came back and then went again.
fire up itunes then plug the phone in, select your phone down the left hand side menu, click restore.
Question Author
Informed by OH that he has done that.
while you have it plugged into to itunes, click on the "help" tab at the top and click "run diagnostics" also make sure you have done the recent update 4.0.2
Question Author
Mine's a version 3 - does the 4 in the update relate to the version 4?
Plug the phone in the computer then hold down the home button and top button for 10 to 12 seconds, then release the top button. When the computer detects your phone it should come on.
the update covers 3,3gs and 4

Got ITunes up but can't find the help bit (I am such a t!t at this).
right at the top left (file, edit, view, controls, store, advanced, help)
Question Author
Right, I've done that but it says it cannot detect an IPhone (although when I plugged the phone into the computer it lit up, the apple appeared and then disappeared).
