Hi, Got a HP 1317 all in one printer.....Trouble is it has just started showing "check print cartridge" when switched on and won't work whilst it is showing. The cartridges were both changed very recently and haven't done much work,and it has only just started playing up....I have put them in and out a dozen times,and even just held them in hot steam but they STILL won't work! Is it better to buy two new cartridges or a new printer?

Are you using HP brand or compatible. We started using compatibles in our HPs at work and we had all sorts of problems with them not recognising them.

Luckily ours are all out of warrantly now, because using compatibles invalidates any existing warranty.

Just before you get a new printer you could try this:-
With printer switched ON, pull down the front cover so that the cartridges slide to the middle and become accessible.
Now disconnect the printer from the mains by pulling the plug out of the socket.
Remove the cartridges one at a time and clean the metal contacts both on the cleaner and inside the printer with a small artist type painting brush and methylated spirits.
Allow the spirits to dry fully before replacing the cartridges.
When both cartridges are replaced in the printer, replace the mains plug in the socket and close the front cover.
By removing the cartridges after the mains are switched off and replacing them before switching it back on again, the printer cannot register what you have done and will just assume that it was a bad electrical contact. That's what I think, anyway, and it has worked for me in the past.
