What is the point of the iPad?

It isn't a 'phone, its too big to be an iPod and (as I'm led to believe) it is not a subsitiute for a laptop.

Is it simply a genius piece of marketing to appeal to people who like the most up to date gadgets?

Exactly right. Some people feel the need to have the most up to date gadgets, this is a useless piece of technology aimed solely at them.
I personally think the IFAD will be over and done with soon enough. A friend of mine won one in a comp and its ok but I would never buy one.
the advert makes me laugh when you see the girl riding a bike holding it. Its just for showoffs really. And how do you get internet has it got a huge sim in it or a dongle thing built in. I dont get it.
It's useless outside. The screen is far too reflective to be of any use except as a mirror.
Don't know how you're supposed to carry it, at least with a netbook the screen is protected when not in use.
It has a little dinky tiny micro sim in it (if you pay the extra £150 I think it is for the 3G version) otherwise it's wi-fi only.
ah I see
So that's £150 ON TOP of the £600? Jeez!
yes hc, I wondered about that screen too - doesn't seem like such a great idea to me, but then i have no intention of buying one anyway.
Sorry, it's an extra £100

iPad 16GB Wi-Fi only £429.00
iPad 16GB Wi-Fi + 3G £529.00

iPad 64GB Wi-Fi £599.00
iPad 64GB Wi-Fi + 3G £699.00
Funnily enough people said all those things about the iPod when it first came out in 2001.

They have gone on to sell 260 million iPods. I suspect the iPad is an attempt to do the same for video what the iPod did for Audio.

It appears to be working. They were expected to sell 2million this year, which they sold in the first month. The iPad is selling faster than the iPod when it debuted and faster than the iPhone. They can't make them fast enough.
I have had a play with a friend's iPad - wonderful resolution, and yes, a very shiny screen.

Which is great - until you smear your surprisingly greasy fingers across it.

Kind of good for idly surfing the net with though!

All the best

You speak for yourself, Spare Ed. I do not have greasy fingers.

It's good to show off technology but that's all.
Five Reasons to Buy an iPad

Portability. My MacBook Pro sits on an elevated stand and, if it’s anything like yours, is well connected. I have the following connections:

1. Mag-safe power
2. Ethernet
3. FireWire 800 to Time Machine drive
4. USB 1 to USB hub
5. USB 2 to Blue Snowflake Microphone
6. DisplayPort to Cinema Display
7. External Speakers
8. Sonnet eSata Express card

Every time I want to go mobile around the house, I have to dismount the Time Machine drive, disconnect all the wires, then I can take the MBP to another room. I’m looking forward to the day when I can sit on my couch with the iPad ready and waiting on top of the coffee table and just be on the Internet. Right now.

Gaming. The iPhone became a surprise hit among gamers, or at least expanded the market to include lots of previous non-gamers (such as myself). Either way, the iPad is optimized to improve the iPhone gaming experience, allowing new elements to be added to games that can be played on both the iPhone/iPod touch and the new iPad.

Goes well in your minimalist chrome-and-leather living room. That black square coffee table with the glass centre is very nice, sitting between your black sofa and your black plasma-screen telly, but it looks naked somehow. It needs something hi-tech and expensive, yet at the same time stylish and unobtrusive and of course black, sitting on it. Perhaps something with a screen that glows an enticing tropical blue when you touch it. Perhaps something that will let you browse the internet and so on, so you can convince yourself you're working on your screenplay when you're really watching Diagnosis Murder in your black underpants. Remind you of anything?

App Store. The iPad has the power of the App Store behind it. 140,000 apps strong and still steam rolling right along. Not only will there be more iPad centric a Media URL: http://www.dvdtoipadconverters.net/
