 A website wants me to install direct x to access it, is it safe to do so please?

Are you sure its not ActiveX? If it is, be careful.

the latest version of direct x is available from the microsoft website: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx?url=/windows/directx/downloads/default.htm

I imagine this means it fairly safe. Its probably just the website uses videos etc and your pc might seem slow on this website.
