Does anyone have any idea as to why my printer should suddenly started printing the top of the page in English and the rest in either Polish or gobbledegook?

the printer driver is corrupt.
you need to uninstall the printer and drivers then reinstall .that should cure it

Hi Cleggie (nowt to do with "last of the summer wine"? Just tried to uninstall......Last bit, "HP unload DLL patch" would'nt! It says "could not access network location O Error 1606" Any ideas? John

Try Microsoft Fix it center,Maybe it might solve it.
