why does itunes keep hanging

I have my macbook but recently itunes seems to hang, with the little coloured ball spinning. It does it frequently when changing songs and scrolling. Its so annoying! Any ideas why?

Could be caused by a few things.
What mac os are you using?
What version of iTunes?
Are you using Airtunes to play through your hifi?
What memory do you have in your mac?
What other programmes are you running?

it is osx snow leopard, the itunes is up to date, im not using airtunes either. The memory is 4gb, its new laptop. Other applications im using usually include Word and safari
