Why is it that a 1 minute video uploaded from a digital camera is a 10MB .avi file, yet when I import the exact same file into my windows movie maker the extension goes to .wmv and is barely 3MB?

Because it would be compressed to wmv. The avi is probably compressed but not to the extent that it could be.
