You know the section at the bottom of the web page (the bar) which tells you just how the loading of that particular page is doing? This area also (I believe) has an indicator which shows the security of the sire being accessed (a picture of a lock, either closed or open)? Well my section has disappeared. I s this worrying? Should I try to recover it? How?

It only displays if you go to a secure site. Hence there isn't on one the bottom of this site.

Sorry, I wasn't just talking about the security indicator, but the whole strip along the bottom, including (but perhaps especially) the progress bar.
click View at top of web browser and check Status Bar. It will come back.
