CD direct copying no longer possible

a few months ago my Nero 6 suddenly refused to copy a CD to another CD in the same drive, saying only "Burning failed at 48X". After trying a few things I found I can save an image on the hard drive and then burn it to a blank at the reduced speed of 32X. I had not changed any hardware or software when this happened, and I have re-installed both Nero and the DVD driver (Lite-on DVDRW SOHW-1693S).
I cannot find how to reduce the speed for normal burning, the option only appears when burning a saved image to CD.
Can anyone help ??
Thanks

Not sure about 6, but in Nero 7, it's one of the questions on the first page after choosing "Copy".
It asks for the write speed (which defaults to Maximum) and the write method (which defaults to Disc-at-once)
